Congratulations to President Elect Barack Obama

    By admin | November 5, 2008

So… He did it… Barack Obama is now the new President Elect for the United States of America, and he one with an impressive fashion.  Some Republican/McCain supporters may disagree with that, but the results are in and Obama won in a land slide.  I do not see this as a political parties victory, this election is an American victory.  The American people stood up and declared who that wanted for the next President of the United States, and they did so in great numbers.

Last night I was watching the election with friends and it was an exciting moment when we learned that Obama had won.  The night got more exciting when we heard his victory speech… I had a strong sense that I was watching history in the making, and I know I will always remember that moment.

The country will soon be in the hands of President Elect Barack Obama and the Democratic Party… I just hope that this last year was not just all talk, and we the people see some serious change.  But in my opinion at this moment, I strongly believe that we elected the best man for the job.  I believe this, not because of his policies or his track record… I believe this because President Elect Obama is a man that can bring together and motivate people.  That is the type of man we need in the White House… A man that realizes that for the United States to progress into the future we have to do it TOGETHER.

I am ready to do my part, are you?

SIDE NOTE: I plan on going to Washington DC to see our new Presidents inauguration.  I cannot think of a better time to visit our capital for the first time.

    VOTE (Election Day - November 4, 2008)

    By admin | November 4, 2008

So… today is the big day. It is every political analyst’s wet dream… It is Election Day! Today I cast my vote at precisely 10:03am. I went early so that I would beat the end of the day rush.

I love the excitement that builds with Election Day. I can just imagine what it feels like to be running for public office. Election Day is the day that people voice their opinion and the race is over. This is the day that we find out who won.

To the United States citizens out there that choice not to voice their opinion and do not vote, those are the people that I lose respect for. It is this day that our country was founded on… this is the reason that we are suppose to be such a great country. Yes, I know politics and politicians can get frustrating, confusing, irritating, and even boring. But if you don’t take a few moments to educate yourself on the issues and to go out and cast your vote today, then all the American blood that has been spilled in the past defending this freedom that we all take for granted, will have been for nothing. The past few years, with regards to the Iraq War, I have always heard people talking about the respect they have for the veterans… that is why I see yellow ribbons on everyone’s vehicle. I think the best way you can show respect to our veterans is to take advantage of the right that they fight so hard to defend.

Also… If you do not vote today, then you waive all right to be able to bitch and complain about U.S. politics. That is a privilege reserved for only those that participate in the system. So let your voices be heard today and got to your local polling place and vote.

SIDE NOTE: Do you know why elections are always held on Tuesdays? I heard today that it goes back to when this country was founded and the main transportation system was horse and mainly people farmed. It was decided that by holding the election on a Tuesday then voters who lived over a days ride away would have enough time to get to the polls to vote. Think about that… people used to travel an entire day just to cast their ballet and then would just jump back on their horse and buggy and travel another day back. Voters would give up two entire days just for their right to vote.

Voting… A Democracy that can not Support Its Most Basic Principle

    By admin | October 29, 2008

So earlier today I was listening to To The Point and one of the subjects discussed dealt with issue of voting, and problem that election officials are having with collecting votes.

This being one of the most anticipated elections, with increased turn outs during the primaries, one would assume that election official would be prepared for the increased turn out for this election.  In fact the idea of early voting, was set in place in order to tackle the problems of extended waits on election day.  As the the discussion advances you learn that there have been reported as long as 4, 6, and even 12 hour waits in some of the early voting locations in the south.  How many people will not end up voting because they have to wait anywhere from 4 to 12 hours?

The program then goes on to show that voting machines in West Virgina have been shown to be flipping casted votes to another candidate, because the machine was not calibrated correctly.

During this discussion on voting, weather it pertains to individuals being able to cast a vote or the machine casting the correct vote, the idea was suggested that election committee is underfunded… like the majority of government run programs.  But while voting is underfunded, records are being set on how much is being spent by the candidates for this election.  So isn’t it in the candidates best interest that the correct vote and all the votes are being cast?  Why then do we not make these candidate contribute a percentage (for example: 5% or 10%) of their election campaign funds?

The basic principles of this country are that every man and woman is free and has an equal voice.  The voting system is in place for that to happen, and it is this principle that has lead us in to many wars.  But if we can not successfully run the voting system, how can we honestly say that in the United States every man and woman have an equal voice?  There are many problems that exist in this country… and, in my opinion, the majority of the problems that exist with the government programs is that they are run inefficiently and underfunded.

Is the Consumer Seeing the Full Decrease in Fuel Prices?

    By admin | October 22, 2008

So, the other day I was making one of my frequent drives into the city and I had my car radio tuned to NPR.  I use this time to keep myself informed on what is happening in the world.  Like most people, I have noticed that gas prices have been on the decline.  I guess that is one plus that we can contribute to the latest economic problems.  The news report that I was listening to at this particular moment informed me that gas prices are now down 29% from the peak that they reach a few months earlier.  I said to myself, “Well at least there is some good news.”

But then the news report continued to report, and I was informed that the price of a barrel of oil is down 50% from the same peak a few months earlier.   Does anyone see a problem with this?  The oil companies have conditioned us as consumers to accept higher gas prices.  So instead of the consumer seeing the entire 50% price drop, we are only seeing a portion of it and the oil companies are pocketing the other 21%.  Well at least that is my theory, and with the oil companies setting profit records in a time of economic crisis, I think it is a pretty good theory.

This is just another example of how the oil companies have us all by the balls.  It is time for us all to become responsible for our energy use… also finding alternative sources.  Alternative energy technology is the future and it is time to start our future.

In the News: Man Killed Wife in Facebook Row

    By admin | October 17, 2008

There was a tragic story released today by BBC: Man Killed Wife in Facebook Row.  The story report of the horrific murder of a mother of two.  Apparently the confessed murderer, her ex-husband, lost control when he saw the proof of his failed marriage staring back at him on the Social Networking Site (SNS) Facebook.  This is a tragic story and the guilty man deserves the 14 years that he was sentenced… if not more.

This story does captivate me.  It is another example of how cyberspace has an effect on our real lives.  Even though I do not condone the actions of the convicted killer, I can understand how cyberspace can make it difficult.  I have gone through break-ups and dealt with the aftermath.  It is not pleasant to see your personal business placed in a public forum… serving as a reminder of how you failed. That can drive anyone crazy.  Even though I understand how this man may have got to this state of mind while drunk and high on cocaine, it does not excuse his actions.

In my opinion, as western society as progressed, people have become more individualistic and have separated from their communities, or are members of much smaller communities.  What SNS and cyberspace are doing, is reconnecting or increasing our community size.  I will theorize that as cyberspace grows the individualistic nature of western society will diminish back to a communal state of mind.

Lastly, I would just like to say that my thoughts and prayers go out to those family members and friends that were effected by these tragic events.
